General Dancing Sessions
Thursday evenings from 8:00 pm until 10:30
pm from
11th September, 2008 until 18th June, 2009. The only
exception is that there is no session on 22nd January, 2009,
which is the evening before our Burns Night.
Unless otherwise
stated, all events take place in
St Mark's Church Hall, Church
Hill Road, Surbiton.
The first night of our new season - 11th September -
is just before Dance Scottish Week. There is a list on
the website of the London Branch of the RSCDS giving details of
all the Dance Scottish Week events in the South-East during the
period from 12th to 20th September.
Special Evenings - Apart from the
60th Anniversary Dance and our annual Burns' Night Dinner Dance held in January each, these
evenings (described below) cost £2.00 per person plus a Canadian supper
(in other words we all bring some food to share and the
Society adds the wine to keep our spirits high).
But we still manage to pack in 12 or more dances into the evening.
Anniversary Dance
2007/08 marks the Society's Diamond Jubilee. We
are holding a 60th Anniversary Dance on Saturday, 27 September, 2008,
dancing to the marvellous music of Dave Hall and his Scottish
Country Dance Band at Tolworth Girls' School to mark the
occasion. Details
St Andrew's Evening
27th November, 2008.
As the long nights set in, come and be cheered up with a special
party (photos) with some Scottish (and other) delicacies and a dance programme
featuring some St Andrews connections (for instance the Saltire
Society Reel - the Saltire being another name for the St
Andrew's Cross national flag).
New Year Party
1st January, 2009.
We can expect lots of visitors as many other clubs close down over the
Christmas period. But like the old Windmill Theatre, we
never close (well almost never - we do have a summer break).
Have a look at the photogallery.
Burns' Supper (Dinner and Dancing)
Our annual celebration of the birthday of Scotland's bard will be held in Claygate village hall
on Friday, 23rd January, 2009. The event in January, 2008
was as usual a sell-out with 88 members, guests and visitors
from a number of local clubs attending. (Photos) The haggis was
piped in by Stewart Murray and toasted by Ewan Mackay.
Rosemary Sloggett's brother, Ross, gave us a fantastic immortal memory and
proposed the toast to the
lasses. We have a selection of
photos from previous event in the Members' page.
Spring Event (26th March, 2009)
We all get dressed up
a bit to welcome in the Spring.
Anyone can be an
MC (date to be announced) A group of our members take over the
role of MC in turn by talking us through the "walkthroughs" of their
favourite dances. Annual General Meeting
This will be held on 14th May, 2009 at 8:00 pm and followed by a slightly
curtailed general dancing session. End-of-Season Party (18th June 2009) Get dressed up and come and celebrate another year
of fun and frolics.
As with any other of our special events, Non-Members are welcome. Request a Dance
We have not yet decided on the date for this evening, when the
programme is based on requests from the members. There is
sure to be lots of dancing and given the
familiarity of many of the dances, we will have shorter walkthroughs. If you have a
favourite dance that you would like us to do at one of our
weekly sessions, then don't be shy! Tell our secretary,
David Horwill.
Tuition Sessions
On certain evenings, and in particular when Jim Cook is our MC, we spend a bit more time on tuition.
